ULUPNA WINERY, Goulburn Valley; Good Life in a Glass The vineyard and winery is a family business initiated with the love for the land that we owned since the 1980s. Ulupna Winery commenced operations in 1999. The vineyard, winery and cellar door welcomes our local and international clients. The property is situated on the Murray River in the vicinity of Barmah Park. Nestled next to the Murray River, our rich-in-minerals alluvial soil and distinct climate create a terroir unique to Ulupna. The grape growing industry in the Golbourn Valley dates back the 1950s with the region hosting some of the oldest Shiraz and Marsanne vines in the world, some of which arrived from France’s Rhone Valley in the 1860s. Since 2000, we have planted 22 hectares, with approx. 50,000 vines (Shiraz 50%, Cabernet Sauvignon 30% and Chardonnay 20%). The fruit is carefully nurtured into international recognised Single Vineyard award winning wines. The taste of Ulupna wines ranges from traditional to modern as Ulupna combines the latest winemaking technology with a respect for tradition. Ulupna as a name has Aboriginal origins, whereby it is the name of a family group part of the Yorta Yorta tribe. The Yorta Yorta people traditionally lived in the area surrounding the junction of the Goulbourn and Murray Rivers. Ulupna additionally means “strong women” in indigenous dialects; a meaning particularly valued by Viviana and her mother, Kathy who together run the vineyard. Ulupna wines thus embody a spirit of feminine resilience, peace and independence in addition to a maternal element of nourishment shared by both Viviana and Kathy with the vineyard.
